Airtel Clarifies Mobile Hotspot Policy on Unlimited 5G Plan

Airtel has officially confirmed that its Unlimited 5G mobile data plan does not allow data sharing via mobile hotspot. This clarification comes after reports earlier this year suggested that the telecom operator would be upgrading its network to 5G Standalone (SA) technology, similar to its rival Jio. However, Airtel's current 5G network, known as 5G Non-Standalone (NSA), operates on a 4G-based infrastructure. This means that the so-called “unlimited” 5G data offered by Airtel has a 300GB monthly data cap, which has been in place since the launch of the plan. In reality, Airtel’s 5G NSA network does not utilize the full potential of 5G technology, often consuming data from the daily limit. Furthermore, users are not allowed to use the unlimited 5G data for hotspot sharing from the start. This limitation has been a point of contention among users, who have reported receiving frequent calls and messages from Airtel to recharge their plans, even when the pack is about to expire. In contrast, Jio, another major Indian telecom operator, offers truly unlimited 5G data with no cap on hotspot usage. This difference in policy has sparked debate among users, who are weighing their options when choosing between Airtel and Jio’s 5G plans.
We already saw reports that Airtel doesn't allow Unlimited 5G data sharing via mobile hotspot.
Now, it is officially mentioned on Airtel's website that mobile hotspot is not allowed on its Unlimited 5G mobile data plan.
The 300GB monthly data cap has also been there since the beginning.
Airtel is currently offering 5G NSA, which is an enhanced 4G-based network.
However, reports in February this year claimed that Airtel would start upgrading to 5G SA, the true standalone 5G network that Jio has been offering since day one.
Airtel 5g:
- Still Runs on NSA towers (4G infrastructure)
- The so-called unlimited 5G has a cap of 300GB from day 1
- It doesn’t even use 5G most of the time and consumes from your daily limit
- You can’t use Unlimited 5G for hotspot from day 1
Also, if your pack expires in a few days, they start spamming you with calls and messages to recharge, before stopping incoming calls entirely
Meanwhile Jio allows hotspot usage on their unlimited 5G. ( jio = truly unlimited no cap
